Using the Humanities to Help Heal A hospital in Spokane is using literature, poetry, music, and art to build better doctors. bY.JAMIR INAMDAR The first time Travis Hughes encountered this passage was immediately before one of his daily patient rounds as a medical resident at Spokane’s Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center. That might seem like an unusual moment to start thumbing through the classic novels of American literature. But this was actually a formal, albeit casual, session called A Daily Dose of the Humanities. “Daily Dose” is an ongoing educational initiative that’s part of the Providence Internal Medicine Residency program, and is designed to enrich the curriculum at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Spokane.   Birds increase human happiness, study finds Share This: Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Print this Article Share to Email The number of bird species in a person’s surroundings correlates to happiness, according to a new  quality-of-life study  of more than 26,000 adults from 26 European countries. Adding 10 percent more bird species to a vicinity increases the life satisfaction of Europeans at least as much as a comparable increase in income, the study notes. Why It’s Important To Work Hard WRITTEN  by   jamir Inamdar There are some people who choose minimalism as a means to escape work. While I understand the appeal, I am not one of them. I enjoy hard work. I find happiness and joy in it. And I believe, without a doubt in my mind, those who feel the most fulfilled at the end of their lives are those who have chosen to work hard during it. Now, just to be clear, I am  not  advocating to be busy  just to be busy . I am advocating for the importance of doing  your  work (whether paid or unpaid) in a focused and deliberate way, putting your whole self into it. Doing the best you can, to accomplish the most you can, with the one life you’ve got. But if one has chosen minimalism as a lifestyle, where do we find the motivation to learn how to work hard? Tree-planting  is the process of  transplanting  tree  seedlings , generally for  forestry ,  land reclamation , or  landscaping  purpose. It differs from the transplantation of larger  trees  in  arboriculture , and from the lower cost but slower and less reliable distribution of tree  seeds . Trees contribute to their environment over long periods of time by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. During the process of photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen we breathe. A tree planter in northern Ontario. Tree planting is an aspect of  habitat conservation . In each plastic tube a hardwood tree has been planted. In  silviculture  the activity is known as  reforestation , or  afforestation , depending on whether the area being planted has or has not recently been forested. It involves planting seedlings over an area of land where the  forest  has been  harvested  or  damaged
